Dementia and Training of Staff at St. Raphael’s
St. Raphael’s includes Dementia training upon hire for all direct care staff. This training includes: Communication, Pain, and Behaviors associated with Dementia.
Annually all direct care staff receive a refresher on Dementia through an online system, which may include one or all of the following: The courses chosen are determined by review of quality data and how to best advance staff in their skill with the treatment of persons with Alzheimer’s.
- Alzheimer’s Managing Challenging Behaviors
This session looks at underlying causes of behaviors and helps us determine interventions to prevent the behavior or minimize the behavior.
- Alzheimer’s Tips for Communicating with Individuals Who Have Alzheimer's disease
This session reviews communication techniques to utilize with a person with memory problems, and teaches skills to use to better understand what they are trying to communicate.
- Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia
This session reviews the causes of dementia, the varied diagnosis of dementia, and gives the student insight into the physiological causes of dementia, and better prepares them for interactions with the specific type of dementia.
Additionally, St. Raphael’s incorporates dementia related subjects with all of it’s in person courses, and utilizes the CMS Hand in Hand dementia training.
